PEC is a challenging geographic area to service, with 77% of the population residing in rural communities and 1,200 km of roads to maintain with a low-density tax base.

Public transit

Lack of public transportation has been cited as an obstacle to accessing fresh food, obtaining employment, completing education and maintaining connections with the community.

The PEC Transportation Collective Getting Around group of 20 partner organizations works toward an integrated affordable and sustainable transit system in PEC.

In August 2020, after years of fundraising and community efforts, County Transit non-profit public transportation pilot was launched. Routes are adjusted based on uptake and feedback.

Three transit models meet unique challenges.
❏ Fixed route transit services; used to connect smaller urban areas to other transit services in the region;
❏ Flex route transit services; used with the Fixed route service for rides within a 5km radius of the fixed route;
❏ On-Demand transit services: offered in 3 levels
     ❏ Door to Door Specialized (Qualify)
     ❏ Stop to Hub/Stop
     ❏ Door to Hub/Stop

The fixed/on demand route services are used primarily by students and riders getting to employment. Specialized is used primarily by community groups and for medical appointments.

County Transit  provides on-demand and fixed routes with four return trips to Belleville from Monday to Friday.  Passengers can transfer at the Belleville Transit Station for connections to Loyalist College, VIA Rail, Belleville General Hospital and shopping.

In 2022, the installation of the first transit shelter in Bloomfield solidified a hub. Bloomfield is central to the activity and is also a transfer station. It is hoped that more shelters can be installed before the pilot ends in 2025.

Accessible transportation

The Women’s Institute was instrumental in the launch of the Accessible Transportation program in 2007 with a $100,000 donation over the first five years, and they have continued to donate annually.  The service, contracted through Quinte Access, provides seniors and people with mobility issues with door-to-door transportation, allowing them to get to and from medical appointments, work and school, social events, day-to-day errands and more throughout Prince Edward County and beyond.

Quinte Access provides door-to-door service for seniors & those with limited mobility.

taxi and Uride services

Uride is a new pilot in PEC that provides ridesharing services. PEC is a challenging area for Uride, however, it has a committed driver base that has to travel long distances to pick up and drop off riders. Over 99% of rides have received 5 stars which puts PEC as the best Uride area overall.

The majority of rides are tourism related – events – restaurants – pubs etc. Uride currently operates in PEC from 9am-11pm (Sun. to Thurs.) and 9am-3am (Fri. and Sat).
