PEC Housing Plan

Housing Plan

Vital Signs data is a key component of the plan. The first of its kind in Prince Edward County (May 2023), the 155-page Prince Edward County Housing Plan was developed in partnership with 15 community agencies.

The plan documents income, demographic trends and housing stock through the full range of the housing spectrum from emergency, supportive and subsidized housing to affordable rental housing stock and the services which support residents with housing insecurity. York University is als0 engaged in research related to PEC affordable housing.

Exploring alternative forms of housing

With the added support of a summer student in 2023, Vital Signs has made significant progress in exploring the potential for house sharing and co-housing in Prince Edward County.

House sharing and co-housing initiatives aim to bridge the gap between those who have excess housing space (home providers) and those in need of housing (home seekers). It’s noteworthy that 27% of PEC’s population, comprising 3005 households, consists of single occupants, many of whom are seniors who may be overhoused (homes larger than their personal requirements.)

The house sharing initiative continues to move forward in collaboration with Wellington Rotary and Queen’s University.

Counteracting NIMBYism (not in my back yard)

Vital Signs, in collaboration with PEC Affordable Housing, is developing an information campaign to help dispel misconceptions about affordable housing. NIMBYism (Not In My Backyard) often opposes the construction of affordable housing in certain areas, exacerbating housing crises and limiting housing options for those in need.

Encouraging a more inclusive approach allows for equitable development that benefits all members of the community, not just a select few.
