Evolution of The Getting Around Transportation Collective

The Getting Around Transportation Collective of 19 organizations shares the vision of an integrated transportation system in PEC that is sustainable, barrier-free, affordable, and meets the needs of people in the community. 

Accessible Transportation

The Women’s Institute was instrumental in the launch of the Accessible Transportation program in 2007 and they continue to support it. Quinte Access provides door-to-door service for seniors & those with limited mobility.

2013

The Getting Around working group formed

The Getting Around working group, coordinated and facilitated by the County Foundation, started working to actively address local transportation issues.

2014

Deseronto Transit

Council approved pick up and drop off for riders within the boundaries of the County.

2015

Pilot project planning initiated

A grant application was awarded to fund public open houses and consultations with employers and service providers to help inform the project.

2019, 2020

Ensuring a successful pilot

  • Creating awareness of the service
  • Performance monitoring and on-board passenger surveys
  • Adjusting routes based on demand
  • Acquiring sponsor funding to apply toward bus shelters

The need for public transit was prioritized

The need for public transit was emphasized in the 2013 Vital Signs Report.

early 2014

Community survey on transportation needs

Over 600 survey responses were received, with 21% indicating that transportation is a problem for them or their family, and an additional 28% indicating that transportation sometimes poses a problem. Getting to work, school and medical appointments were the most frequently cited issues.

Research of other rural transportation models

The working group consulted with transportation providers in other rural areas to gain a perspective from a working model of integrated rural transportation.
